The World Watch Institute is an organization that looks at population growth, poverty, resource degradation and more to try and find ways for humans to live environmentally sustainable lifestyles. Their report, which you can download below, was released in 2008 and claims that 51% of all Greenhouse Gasses (which create climate change) come from livestock and their byproducts. In other words it comes from eating meat and animal by products. The study is easy to read and pretty self explanatory, but I'll give you a little bit of background. In 2006 the United Nations said that 18% of all Greenhouse Gasses come from livestock. That number is higher than all of transportation put together, which making buying hybrid cars important but definitely not as important as going vegan. Interesting that that's not the message you'd hear from our media. The World Watch Institute took the UN data and then added in feedback loops, such as what happens when the trees that were cut down can't take in the C02 that is now being emitted. All of these new calculations, as explained in the handy download, show that 51% of Greenhouse Gasses come from livestock and their byproducts. Keep in mind that this is livestock and byproducts, not just livestock, so while going vegetarian is helpful to the environment it is still a part of that 51%. To completely eliminate Greenhouse Gasses from animals we need to consume a plant diet. Attachments:
